I started my coding journey in August of 2019, when my parents started teaching me a few things about coding for my high school coding classes. My introductory CS course in high school opened my eyes to the world of computers, teaching me how to code in two different languages while illustrating how the computer works. I was shocked at how little I knew about computers despite having grown up surrounded by technology. My friends and I would spend several weeks applying all our CS knowledge to code basic games like Ping Pong and Hangman together.
When the COVID-19 crisis hit, I was overcome by this urge to do something for my community more than ever. I had done some volunteer work for my community before, such as teaching acro to little children and volunteering at an underprivileged school in Newark, but I could not pursue those while in quarantine. Because of this previous volunteering, I knew for sure that I loved working with children and that I loved sharing what I knew to those who wanted to listen. Meanwhile, I continued to enjoy myself in CS classes and went on to take courses that gave me an even deeper understanding of what goes on inside a laptop.
One of my school friends who also worked with Aigolearning told me how Aigolearning was recruiting teachers to help teach paid coding classes to children. I was immediately interested in combining my passion to teach with my passion for CS, and jumped at the chance. I was put in a Scratch + AI class to assist and loved talking to the children in the class and helping them better their coding skills. While working with some of the other teams, I learned that Aigolearning wanted to start a new mission which pushed free coding classes for people who could not afford it or were underrepresented in STEM. I volunteered to lead this mission with Eddie, who I was also working with in the Scratch + AI class. Working on STEM for All with Eddie makes me feel so joyful because it allows me to give back to the community through something I enjoy and am good at, coding!
Through my work at Aigolearning, I intend not only to teach students coding, but to provide them with an accepting community that they can look to for guidance. Rather than having a strict student and teacher guidelines, we want students to feel like they are part of a family during their coding classes. In our current world, I think learning and education are seen only as a pathway to a good future, whereas learning itself should be the goal. When students learn how to think for themselves and how to learn by themselves, they have already achieved success. I have always learned best when I learn for myself and am not pressured to master a certain skill. By having our classroom environments be more relaxed, students are encouraged to love learning and continue their journey for knowledge.
Eddie and I are currently focused on recruiting students for our first STEM for All classes! If your family is in need of free coding classes or know people who might not be able to afford coding classes/are underrepresented in STEM, sign up at https://forms.gle/KRdaXjQevz5DoMii9! Those who do not fit under our STEM for All umbrella can still help out by sharing our message and following us on our social media. We also offer general coding classes, which you can check out at our general website, https://aigolearning.org/. With your help, STEM for All can reach across America and into the homes of those in need.
